If you have been watching singing reality shows such as The American Idol series, you would have heard the judges using words such as “pitchy” or “off key”. What exactly does pitchy means? It simply means that the singer went out of tune or could not sing well in a certain key or at times singing off key.

The problem is that if you do this on stage, you will be thinking too much and this will affect your performances and the delivery of the songs. You may sound too clinical and the delivery of your songs may sound too opaque, devoid of emotional feelings.

So the answer is to practice with the right vocal exercises and songs until hitting the notes accurately becomes your second nature. Remember, for musicians and singers, the practice and rehearsals are the actual work. The performance is something to be enjoyed.

Once you have achieved the ability to sing in tune all the time, you must be very meticulous and fastidious during the sound checks before the performances. If at anytime you have difficulty in hearing yourself, you must insist that the sound technician control the sounds until you can sing and pitch comfortably.

The same applies to your band members. If any of the instrumentation is disturbing or distracting you, you will have to ask the musicians concerned to do something about it. Remember, the lead singer is the star of the show and no musicians should overshadow you and make you look bad.

So to be able to sing in tune all the time ultimately boils down to practicing with the right vocal exercises, meticulous rehearsals and sound checks.

Most people think that singers with good voices are born with them. Yes, although some people have better singing voices than others, most, if not all good singers undergo vocal training to improve their voices.

Unfortunately, some people think that to sing powerfully, they have to shout. No, they don’t have to. You can develop a powerful voice with the correct vocal exercises without having to shout.

Your vocal cords collide with each other more than a million times everyday when you produce a sound and so, any extra harsh activities like shouting puts further strain on the already overused vocal cords.

When recovering from a coarse voice like say, from a sore throat, avoid any unnecessary conversations or phone calls to let your voice fully recover. Otherwise your recovery will be slower and even then, small permanent damages may occur.

You need to know that your vocal cords are muscles and therefore like any muscles, they need a thorough warm up before it can perform at its peak when you are singing. By the same token, they need to be cooled down with vocal exercises after your performances.

Just because you get away without warming up or cooling down now does not guarantee that you will not damage your voice in the future.

Next on the list is to avoid late night eating because this may end up with your stomach acid spilling into your larynx when you lie down to sleep and causing a hoarse voice and over the long term, permanent voice damage.

These are just some of the many things that you should not do to preserve, protect and maintain your voice producing mechanism so that you can have a good singing voice permanently.

As singing tutors demand you to focus on singing by using your diaphragm, you may curiosity however it’s enduring to better your singing. Coaching teachers advise you to rehearse vocal breathing exercises.

Using your diaphragm for breathing itself is not easy and using it for singing is still more difficult. The fact is that diaphragmatic breathing and diaphragmatic singing have nothing to do with good singing, leave alone improving the quality of singing.

I don’t think that practicing of your singing skill have nothing to do with your singing quality. After all, our purpose of practice singing exercise is solely to improve our singing skill and quality. In fact, it’s related to the speech level singing where it is the best combination of breathing, speech and singing.

Speech level singing will inspire you to concentrate on singing and that will help the process of improvement. It can be said that diaphragmatic breathing may increase intake of air but it has no relation with the quality of singing. Using it for singing will lead you to doing more of an exercise than singing.

Try to breathe using your diaphragm; I’m sure you will feel very hard. In my opinion, diaphragmatic breathing is not related to diaphragmatic singing at all. You must focus on the exercises that can actually improve your singing skills.

You do not require a lot of air to sing. One simple fact overlooked by many instructors who insist on vocal breathing exercises is that higher the note in singing, the less the air required by your vocal chords. Therefore it is wrong to emphasize deep breathing for good singing. Whatever the other benefits, more intake of air is not required by our vocal chords, neither in singing nor in speaking.

With speech level exercises, the air pressure required will come in a rather natural manner. The bonus is that your pitch level will get better and your voice will get its own character and flow.

On the other hand, speech level exercises can help you to improve your singing. When the practice of singing gives you the pleasure of singing only then you become fully engrossed in singing. Improvement in the quality of singing is not possible if you turn the very process of singing into an exercise.

On practice session of the speech level singing, you improve the skill of your singing. You will be able to hit higher notes which you considered wasn’t achievable for you. You bequeath find that you’ll be able to coast over a wide range of notes effortlessly without stressing your chords.

With speech level workouts, the air pressure needed bequeath deliver a rather natural manner. The inducement is that your pitch grade will get better and your voice will gets onto possess improving character and stream.

On that point, there has very much you are capable to learn from your fashionable superstars through following their performances. Respect and study and then practice without the draws rein of an exercise. It certainly will improve your singing skill.
